Palmistry – Truth or False? | Sociable7

Palmistry is one of the oldest studies in the world. It is said to have originated in India and then spread throughout China finding its way to Egypt, Greece and then to Europe. The reading of hands is not mere superstition but a science that was studied by the ancients along with astrology and has developed and been used ever since. It consists of the practice of evaluating a person’s hand. Various lines and mounts purportedly suggest interpretations by their relative sizes, qualities, and intersections. In some traditions, readers also examine characteristics of the fingers, fingernails, fingerprints and skin patterns, skin texture, shape of the palm, and flexibility of the hand.

The popularity has led many to read their palms and plan ahead but is there any actual truth to it?

Palmists argue Palmistry is not about your future or a prediction table but rather a map of you and your possibilities. It is not about learning when you will die or how you will die, it is about what your hand tells you what your traits are and the potential you have in life. It should be used as a moving guide after all our life path is never cast in stone. Your palm can tell you what you would be good at, what has influenced you and many other little trinkets. For example Palmists have discovered people with small hands are generally crafty and on the go, so attribute this to small handed people across the globe; when there is a correlation between people with similar hand shapes/lines and a specific trait then palmists will take it on board.

However, I have picked up that there are various methods and theories to hand reading, a palmist usually begins by reading the person’s ‘dominant hand’ because the other is subconsciously motivated but there are other variations such as: “The future is shown in the right, the past in the left”; “The left hand is the one we are born with, and the right is what we have made of it”; “The right hand is read for men, while the left is read for women”; “The left is what the gods give you, the right is what you do with it”; “The right hand is read for right-handed people, while the left is read for left-handed people“. This is just one example of the conflicting views of palmists. Maybe its just another superstious hobby.

Another significance to palmistry is the lines represented on the palm, we all have lines on our palm and throughout our lives they change, ancients probably noticed this and a science was developed. Some of the lines are: Life line – reveals the strength of your vitality, Head line – reveals your beliefs, your approach to life and intellectuality, Heart line – reveals emotions and events that are centered around love and Fate line – reveals whether you are controlled by fate and how good yours is. It’s difficult to believe everything about you and your ‘possible’ future lies in your hands but, maybe thats just the beauty of palmistry. Maybe your world is in your hands.

You can buy many books that go into detail about each part of the hand but just another piece of palmistry thats interesting is that the bumps on our palms have a meaning too. Each mount relates to a corresponding planet with a specific portfolio. The mounts of the hand provide a tangible record of how we deal with each of these planetary influences, and what our challenges are. The mounts are Luna, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Mercury and Rahu and Ketu. So for example, Jupiter is a pretty active planet with all the ‘gas explosions’, if the Jupiter mount on your palm is bulging, it may mean your life is pretty active (negatively) at the moment.

Evidence gathered by palmists over hundreds of years does suggest some certainty however modern science is based on what’s tangible, the lack of empirical evidence supporting its efficacy leaves palmistry in the superstition category. However over the past decade, research has found that the hand does have merit as an instrument to gauge health, innate: abilities, personality traits, and even sexuality. For example stress lines on nails, nail colours showing heart related conditions, thumb shapes and how lines on the palm change during periods of chronic illnesses. I suppose this is similar to studying body gestures or the face or even your handwriting, which all tell a story so to me this doesn’t really give palmistry some superior truth to it.

Personally, I do not think it is possible to determine the future of an individual especially when it comes to certain factors like wealth, as money is relative. A person with a million pounds might think that he has a lot of money but another with the same amount might feel he has very little. A man with a hut might think he has property while a man with two apartments might think he doesn’t. Its nearly as silly as astrology. But as noted earlier, there may be some correlation in terms of health, however in my opinion this doesn’t make it part of the art of palmistry, but simple symptoms identified in the body.

Islam and Palmistry

In Islam fortune telling is haraam (unlawful). As Muslims, we believe that full and accurate knowledge of the future is possessed only by Allah, All-Knowing, Who said in the Qur’an, ‘No soul knows what it will earn on the morrow’ [Luqman 31:34]. Palmistry isn’t necessarily reading your future but if used to portray the individual’s future then there is no place for it in Islam as its being used to trick the innocent, desperate and vulnerable. Islam is opposed to it, just as it is opposed to all forms of superstitions and irrational practices. In a hadith the Prophet said, “Whoever goes to a fortune-teller and asks him [or her] about something and then believes in his [or her] words will have his [or her] Prayer rejected for 40 days.” This alone shows how much it is to be avoided, the idea of having ones prayer revoked to a believer is higher than having your wealth taken from you.
